Are there toilets in the Colosseum?

toilets in the Colosseum

Are there toilets in the Colosseum?

Yes, there are toilets in the Colosseum. As soon as you enter the ancient monument, after the ticket booths and turnstiles, you will see the toilets. They are the only toilets in the Colosseum and there is usually a line. There are a few toilet cubicles so the the line moves fairly quickly.

When exploring the Roman Forum, you’ll come across several restrooms. Look for the signs marked “WC.”

As for the Palatine Hill, there are multiple restroom options available. Right upon entering, you’ll find one to your left.

Further along, as you ascend to the higher areas, there are additional facilities: one near the Palatine Museum, another by the Farnese Rose Gardens, and another adjacent to Domitian’s Hippodrome.

Restroom facilities near the Colosseum

There are public toilets in the area outside the Colosseum, which are located on the complete opposite end of the entrance (from via Celio Vibenna), as well as inside Colosseum / Colosseo metro station.

There are also toilets at the Tourist Information Office on Via dei Fori Imperiali, which is just minutes away form the Colosseum.

Finding Restrooms in Rome

When in Rome and in need of a restroom, most people will understand if you ask in English. Opting for the word “toilet” tends to be more universally recognized than “bathroom.”

If you find yourself facing a communication barrier, don’t fret! Switch to the local lingo.

The Italian phrase to ask for the restroom is “Dov’è il bagno?”. However, if you’re not comfortable with the full phrase, just use the keyword with a questioning intonation:

  • toilet? (pronounced twa-lette)
  • bagno? (pronounced bah-nyo)
  • servizi? (pronounced ser-vee-tsee)

Armed with these phrases, you’ll be well-prepared to locate restrooms in the Eternal City!
