Can I bring a water bottle into the Colosseum?
Yes, you can bring a water bottle into the Colosseum. Given Rome’s warm climate, especially during the summer months, staying hydrated is essential. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
No Glass Containers: You should bring water in a plastic or metal bottle. Glass containers are generally not allowed due to the potential hazard they pose if broken.
Water Refill Stations: Rome is equipped with lots of public drinking fountains, known as “nasoni”. You can refill your water bottle from these fountains, which provide clean, fresh, cold water. Some of these fountains are even located near the Colosseum, so you can refill before or after your visit.
Security Checks: Remember that all bags and personal items will be screened upon entry to the Colosseum. Having a water bottle will not be an issue, but be prepared for it to be inspected.
Dispose Responsibly: If you’re using a disposable water bottle, ensure you dispose of it in a proper waste bin. Better yet, consider using a reusable bottle to minimize environmental impact.
Where to fill up water near the Colosseum
The “nasoni” are Rome’s iconic public drinking fountains that provide fresh, potable water. There are over 2,000 of these fountains scattered throughout the city. The closest nasoni to the colosseum is located by the Colosseo metro station.
Remember, these fountains continuously flow with water. To drink directly from a nasone, block the bottom of the spout (some have a hole for this purpose), and the water will be redirected through a small hole on top, creating an easy-to-drink arc of water.
